Cop charged with graft out on RM10,000 bail

BINTULU: A police chief inspector stationed in Tatau as Criminal Investigation Department head was yesterday charged with two counts of corruption.The first charge stated that between 3pm and 4pm on July 22, 2008 at Tatau police headquarters, he corruptly solicited RM300 from one Seman Abdul Samat.

It was an inducement to discharge Seman from an offence of employing foreign workers without valid permits under the Immigration Act 1963/59.

The accused was charged under Section 10(a)(bb) of the Anti-Corruption Act 1997 and punishable under Section 16 of the same act (Law of Malaysia Act 575).

In the second charge, the accused allegedly obtained RM300 from Seman who wanted to avoid being charged under the Immigration Act 1963/59.

This allegedly took place between 4.30pm and 5pm on July 22, 2008 inside a car bearing registration number QTA2281 parked in front of Garden Village shop in Pasar Baru Tatau.

The offence comes under Section 11(a) of the Anti-Corruption Act 1997 and punishable under section of the same act (Law of Malaysia Act 575, which provides for imprisonment for a term not less than 14 days and not more than 20 years.

The offender is also liable to a fine of not less than five times the sum or value of the gratification.

Deputy public prosecutor is Muhammad Sunti of Kuching Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission while the accused was represented by Hii Chee Wong as his defence counsel.

Senior assistant registrar Dzulbrazli Ali Hamdan at the session’s court chamber fixed the case to Feb 1 for another mention.

The accused was freed on RM10,000 bail with two sureties.
