Sign of cracks in Sarawak DAP

KUCHING: Some cracks seem to appear in the state Democratic Action Party (DAP) with two of its big guns at loggerheads. Its secretary Chong Chieng Jen, who is Bandar Kuching MP, said the party had proposed to discipline one of its stalwarts, Batu Lintang assemblyman Voon Lee Shan for smearing the party’s image.

He told reporters here that the state DAP would make a report to its headquarters in Peninsular Malaysia on the issue, and would also seek its approval whether such action against Voon was possible.

The issue was over an article in Voon’s blog which appeared to have tarnished Chong’s reputation as well.

When contacted for his comments, Voon said the party could do anything it wanted.

“I’m now in a position like what the Malay saying goes, ‘Sudah jatuh, ditimpa tangga’ (I am receiving a double blow),” he said.

Voon is a former treasurer in the state DAP but he lost the post in the party election recently.

The post is now held by Pending assemblywoman Violet Yong.

It is understood that Voon was said to have smeared DAP’s image when he responded to an earlier article posted by a person named ‘Chong’ in his blog.

The article was said to have alleged that Voon was a ‘cry baby’ after losing the treasurer’s post and that he was not contributing anything positive to the party.

Both Voon and Chong are lawyers and observers expected some legal battle.

Observers also said there are now several young party members who wanted to be nominated as candidate in Batu Lintang seat in the next state polls.

They said Batu Lintang is a ‘winnable’ seat for DAP and even a very young member could retain it for the opposition.
