Flood sweeps away three houses in Tongod

SANDAKAN: Three houses in Tongod, near here were swept off by strong current following the floods which hit the district since last week.Tongod Flood Operations Control Centre chairman Daudi Goroh said the houses, situated on a river bank, were among those which were flooded.

The occupants of the houses concerned had left their homes when the flood water rose and were now staying with their relatives, he said yesterday.

He said 251 flood victims who had earlier been evacuated to the Tongod District Council Hall had been allowed to return home yesterday after the flood water in their villages had receded.

However, he said Kpg Karamuak was still cut off from the other areas as the road to the village was still under water.

Meanwhile in Kinabatangan, District Flood Operations Control Centre chairman Arisin Arifin said as at 6pm yesterday, the number of flood victims rose to 2,344 involving 496 families and the water level at Kinabatangan was still at the danger level of 11.32 metres.

He said the affected villages were Tulang-Tulang, Desa Permai, Kuamut, Tangkuyan, Balat, Sangau, Bukit Garam, Seri Manis, Pelangi and Jaya Baru.

He said all the affected victims were evacuated to the relief centres at the Bukit Garam Community Hall, Kampung Buang Sayang Mosque and Sekolah Rendah Kebangsaan Sangau while some were staying at their relatives’ homes which were not affected by the floods. — Bernama
