High Court sets 30 days from May 18 to hear murder case

MIRI: The High Court yesterday set 30 days starting May 18 for the trial of four youths including one juvenile charged with murdering a man.The first trial will take place until May 21. The court has also reserved June 21 to 30 and July 5 to 9 for the continuation of the trial.

The youths have been ordered to be further detained at Miri Central Prison while the juvenile will be detained at Tunas Bakti School in Kuching while awaiting their trial.

The dates were set by Judge Datuk Zulkifli Bakar after allowing an application from deputy prosecutor Franklin Ganggan Bennet.

Jazz Nanang Laurence, 23, from Desa Indah Bandar Baru Permyjaya; Lester Timbang, 21, from Kampung Pasir, Lutong; Arouphaeus Alphonsus, 22, and an 18-year-old juvenile from Quadruplex Bandar Baru Permyjaya here were charged under Section 302 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 34 of the same code which provides for a mandatory death sentence.

Based on the facts of the case, all four accused were charge with murdering Alexander Lumong, 24.

The offence was said to have been committed at 10pm on April 6 last year at Tudan Bazaar.

According to Franklin, a total of 16 prosecution witnesses will be called during the trial.

Jazz and the juvenile are presented by counsel Antalai Sawing, while Lester and Arouphaeus will be represented by assigned counsel later.
