SIBU: Some 1,500 athletes yesterday began competing in the 44th edition of the Sibu Inter-school Sports Meet at Stadium Tun Zaidi.

The meet which will end tomorrow sees the participation of 583 boys and 463 girls from 27 secondary and primary schools – SMK Sacred Heart, SMK St Elizabeth, SMK Methodist, SMK Chung Hua, SMK Bukit Lima, SMK Sedaya, SMK Durin, SMK Chung Cheng, SMK Tung Hua, SMK Deshon, and SMK Bawang Assan.
This year’s meet is organised by SMK Tiong Hin headed by principal Stephen Tan.
The athletes are divided into Under-12, Under-14, Under-15 and Under-18 categories.
Pelawan assemblyman Vincent Goh was the guest of honour at the opening ceremony on behalf of Second Finance Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh.
Sibu District Education officer Wong Chong Kung and the principal of SMK Tiong Hin Stephen Tan Ming Kiong were among those present at the ceremony.
