KUALA LUMPUR: Melaka, who will host the Malaysia Games (Sukma) this year, are targeting to grab 60 of the 400 gold medals at stake at the Games.Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said he was confident the target could be achieved based on the positive feedback received from athletes and the hard work put in by the coaches to prepare for the June 10-19 Games.
In fact, athletes who succeed in winning medals will be rewarded – RM3,000 for gold, RM2,000 for silver and RM1,000 for bronze.
“This is to inspire them to improve their performance,” he said during Bernama TV’s Hello Malaysia programme.
At the 12th Sukma hosted by Terengganu two years ago, Melaka only won 42 gold medals.
Ali said the state government had spent RM2 million to train and prepare the athletes and had allocated RM105 million for infrastructure development and RM40 million for the management of the sports. — Bernama
