The father, Voon Yan Chin, 59, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in March last year.

Since then the family lost their source of income because Voon was the family’s sole breadwinner.

With the assistance from a concerned city dweller, the family managed to secure a one-year special aid from the Welfare Department last year.

This will end this June.

As the family struggled to live with the RM400 monthly special aid, another cruelty hit.

The mother Hii Kin Lan, 37, was found to have diabetes.

“I was diagnosed with diabetes in November last year. Currently, I need to inject insulin twice a day. My monthly medical expenses are about RM200,” she told reporters when met at her house at Jalan Peace Selatan here.

“I actually planned to get a job once my younger son goes to primary school next year. But what kind of job can I do now with such illness? I really want my children to have a better life,” she said.

The couple has two daughters and two sons aged between six and 16 years.

Early last year, Hii approached Chow Chok Yeh, the assistant to Senator Datuk Sim Kheng Hui, for help.

“I forwarded her case to several charity organisations. They did provide assistance to her but it was not sufficient and inconsistent. The family’s monthly expenses is about RM1,000.

“I feel pity for the family. If anything unfortunate happens to the parents, the children will suffer. Therefore, I hope members of the public can lend a helping hand to the family,” Chow told reporters.
