KUCHING: Sarawak Bumiputera Amateur Golf Association (PGABS) are looking to halt Grass Cutter’s fine run in the KGS Team Matchplay Golf Championship at Kelab Golf Sarawak on Sunday.PGABS captain Sukiman Aini said yesterday it would not be an easy task as he was expecting a tough game against the defending champions.

“Our confidence level is up after the 3-2 win over J and J last weekend and we are quite confident of beating Grass Cutter in our next match this week,” he said.

However, PGABS will have to use their reserve players as two members of the team would be going outstation this weekend.

“I don’t see any problem with the line-up as all our players are equally good and we have been practising hard together every weekend for this challenge,” he said.

Meanwhile, Grass Cutter captain Chow Tung Leh also expressed confidence that his team would be able to overcome the challenge from PGABS.

“PGABS are another tough nut to crack but I do believe that we are capable of beating them. The competition is getting more exciting and interesting as we are facing better teams along the way,” he said.

“I expect it to be a tough and good match and it will all depend on the overall performance of our team members on match day,” he added.

If Grass Cutter beat PGABS, Chow is expecting his team to meet Ferrari next as Ferrari, who are playing against SKH Tigers this Sunday, are supported by two good junior players in Leonard Chin and Oliver Ting.

He also predicted Team Titans to triumph over Haw Electrical and Brother’s to beat 2007 champions U1616 although both teams have a 50-50 chance of winning.

Brother’s were declared the winners of last week’s match against KKB by the tournament committee following a complaint lodged by KKB.

The losers of the matches over the last weekend will play in the losers pool tomorrow, with K30 Calon Premier taking on K30 Calon Perdana, KKB against  DPIM, DM Stars versus Kaban 10 and KGS Juniors versus J and J.

The winners of the losers pool matches will earn another chance of winning the title if they can win all their next matches.

This year’s contest is participated by 16 teams compared to 13 last year, vying for the Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr Wong Soon Kai Challenge Trophy.

The championship will be played over the weekends from April 10-May 9, with play based on double knockout format with one foursome, two four-ball and two singles for each match.
