LIMBANG: Twenty-eight Penan children will be able to go back to their respective longhouses during the coming school term holidays, thanks to financial assistance given by the government.Limbang Resident Maria Hasman yesterday handed out a total of RM1,020 to 10 Penan children to enable them to pay for their transport home.

Next week, a total of RM2,130 would be given out to 18 Penan students in Medamit for the same purpose.

“With the financial assistance from the government, the Penan children in both primary and secondary schools will be able to go back to their longhouses during the coming school term holidays.

“We understand that the transportation cost is high because their longhouses are located far in the interior,” said Maria.

Also present at the simple handing-over ceremony were Limbang district officer Anyi Ngau, assistant unit director of the State Planning Unit Mariea Datuk Hassan and an executive from Felcra Berhad Mohd Anuar Hanip.

Maria said the financial aid clearly showed that the government never neglected the needs of Penan children from poor families.
