Violent sex crime up nearly 50 pct in five years

KUALA LUMPUR: The number of sex crimes, including sodomy and incest, increased by almost 50 per cent in five years since 2005.Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Tun Hussein said that last year, a total of 4,238 cases involving sex crimes were reported compared with 2,427 cases in 2005.

In 2006, a total of 2,943 cases were reported, followed by 3,689 in 2007 and 3,986 cases in 2008, he added.

However, he said, the number arrest for such offences during the period was 1,504 in 2005, 1,837 (2006), 2,649 (2007), 2,656 (2008) and 2,701 (2009), while the number of people charged for sex offences was 308 in 2005, 410 (2006), 304 (2007), 228 (2008) and 187 (2009).

Hishamudd in said this in a written answer to a written question by Teresa Kok (DAP-Seputeh) in the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.

To another question by Kok on measures taken by the government to address problems on death in prisons and detention centres, he said the ministry, among others, provided the service of a panel of doctors at all prisons and detention to look into the medical needs of inmates. — Bernama
