KUALA LUMPUR: National Sports Institute (ISN) has assigned 12 sports scientists to assist the Malaysian Thomas and Uber Cup squads in their quest for the two prestigious titles.Malaysia last won the Thomas Cup in 1992.

NSI director-general Datuk Dr Ramlan Abd Aziz said the scientists being assigned to the squads for overseas assignments were double the usual as he felt the players needed extra back-up in the Thomas and Uber Cup campaign.

“For the Thomas and Uber Cup, ISN has a dedicated team comprising 12 scientists, including a psychologist, nutritionist and technician,” he told Bernama here yesterday.

Dr Ramlan said for normal tournaments like the ongoing Super Series championship, only five or six scientists would follow the team.

The team comprise Mohd Roesdi Ab Ghani (conditioning-singles team), Behrad Honar (conditioning-doubles team), Chai Wen Jin (nutritionist), Norhafizah Hussin, KoKum Gayanayh Weeratunga, Jeery Gan (sports analysts), Frederick Tan (psychologist), Chen Jia Mei, Li Da Zi (masseurs) Sandra Fiedler, Fadzil Mohd Salleh (physiotherapists) and Chee Lee Ming (physiologist).

Overall, the ISN preparation for the Thomas and Uber events will be held at Putra Stadium, Bukit Jalil from May 9-16.

Dr Ramlan said ISN had prepared a dedicated team comprising medical doctors and physiotherapist, adding that besides the medical experts led by Dr Victor Faisal, ISN had also put two ambulance outfits on stand-by at the stadium.

“Normally, medical teams for tournaments are handled by Badminton World Federation (BWF).

“While ISN is responsible for the Malaysian team, it will offer its expertise, if needed.”

Dr Ramlan added that ISN would also assist BWF in anti-doping tests for the players. — Bernama
