Ministry monitors tourists’ situation at KLIA

PENANG: The Tourism Ministry from time to time monitors the situation of tourists stranded at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) due to the flight disruptions as a result of the pall of volcanic ash spreading from Iceland since last week.Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen said since Wednesday night 150 tourists were still stranded at KLIA.

“We are monitoring their situation. Today the ministry arranged free rides around Kuala Lumpur to help them pass time,” she told reporters after chairing the state MCA liaison meeting here yesterday.

Dr Ng said Malaysia Airport Berhad (MAB) had also been asked to arrange for buses to take the tourists to nearby hotels.

“They will also arrange for their meals,” she said.

She said the tourists were placed in hotels near to KLIA make it easier for airlines to arrange their travel.

Millions of passengers around the world were stranded after their flights were cancelled following the volcanic ash fallout and subsequent ash cloud over Europe due to volcano eruption in Iceland.

Earlier, Dr Ng, who is also Penang MCA liaison committee chairman, announced the appointments of the state MCA committee where Datuk Koay Kar Huah was appointed advisor and Datuk Dr Loh Hock Hun as deputy chairman. — Bernama
