Teacher found in possession of drugs

KUCHING: A 26-year-old teacher from Peninsular Malaysia was arrested at the Pusa ferry wharf last Sunday after police found 10g of ganja and 1,482 psychotropic pills in his car.Also detained was the teacher’s 17-year-old wife and their 18-month-old baby.

Betong narcotics investigations chief Insp Mohamad Kamarul Anuar Khamis said the husband and wife, who were at the Pusa ferry wharf at about 3.50pm last Sunday, are now being detained to facilitate investigations.

He said the husband, who hails from Pendang, Kedah, is teaching at SMK Beladin while the wife is a homemaker.

Mohamad Kamarul said the couple’s baby had been released to the couple’s close relatives after they came to claim her at the Betong district police station yesterday morning.

To a question, he said the police believed both suspects were involved in supplying drugs to nearby residents and also students.

He said both suspects were detained under Section 6 of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 30(3) of the Poison Act 1952.

“We are investigating the possibility of outsiders involved in supplying the drugs to the suspects. During the remand period, we will interrogate the suspects,” he said.
