SEREMBAN: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) arrested 263 people between January and April this year for corruption, Putrajaya MACC Investigation Division director Mustafar Ali said here yesterday. He said 128 of them were civil servants and the remaining 135 private sector employees and members of the public.

“So far, 60 people have been charged,” he told reporters at the handing over of duties of the Negeri Sembilan MACC director, here.

Zainul Darus handed over duties to his successor Hishamuddin Hashim who had been the Putrajaya MACC Investigation Division deputy director.

Zainal  will take over as the Penang MACC deputy director.

Mustafar said that based on statistics, the number of arrests of civil servants for corruption had dropped and had been on  the  decline over the last four years while arrests of members of the public had gone up.

“This means that the campaign and action to stem the number of civil servants resorting to corruption has been successful,” he said.

Mustafar said that in Negeri Sembilan, 178 arrests were made by the Negeri Sembilan MACC between 2005 and April 2010.

Eighty-five of those arrested were civil servants, 91 private sector, employees and members of the public and two, politicians, he said.

“Five of the civil servants were from the professional & management group (Group A) while 80 were from the support group,” he said. — Bernama
