Yesterday, a local daily reported that those who need to purchase a large amount of sugar for weddings can do so at PPDNKK in Terengganu with the condition they show their invitation cards.

“What about funeral services? Do we need to have a death certificate before we purchase? I think this proposal is absurd,” said Raymond Green,22, studying in a local learning institute.

“It is hard to determine how much sugar we need, especially in our Iban culture. Like other races we also have the ‘wake’ ceremony where people take turns to look after the deceased before burial. This means we need a lot of coffee to stay awake therefore we need a lot of sugar.”

Sebastian Allan, 24, said as an alternative, maybe those who purchase the sugar produce their MyKad.

“Some couples getting married sometimes didn’t make invite cards, maybe by producing their identity card can at least show proof of the wedding.

“With advanced technology nowadays such as Facebook, Twitter and so on, many would-be couples prefer inviting their guests via online,” added Sebastian.

“I hope Miri will not implement such a rule as it is ridiculous and burdening for the community,” said a reader who only wished to be known as Cassandra,25.

“The best thing is to monitor the sale of sugar and find a better way. This proposal will not reduce smuggling; in fact many people will lie about having weddings or other ceremony just so they can purchase sugar in large quantities, she added.
