Nurhafifa is RTM’s Bintang Kecil champion

KUCHING: The meticulous vocal control combined with a relaxed yet professional performance proved to be the winning combination for Sharifah Nurhafifa Wan Aziz who was declared champion of Radio Televisyen Malaysia’s (RTM) Bintang Kecil competition on Saturday night.

The 11-year-old enthralled a packed auditorium with a song entitled ‘Awan Yang Terpilu’ by Ning Baizura.

She received a RM2,000 cash prize, a trophy and certificate of participation.

Sharifah Nurhafifa came in ahead of Fatin Nurhatihah Draman who took second place, and Adelyanna Tang Tze Wee in third place.

Both are also 11 years old. Eight-year-old Muhammad Shahreza Abu Samah who was not only the lone boy participant but youngest finalist in this year’s ‘Bintang Kecil’ picked up the prize for best performance.

They received their prizes from Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

A total of 129 children attended the auditions held from April 19 to May 2 in Limbang, Lundu, Lawas, Mukah, Miri, Sarikei, Saratok, Sibu, Spaoh, Sri Aman and Kuching.

Out of that number, 27 were shortlisted and eight picked to compete in the state finals.

This year’s Bintang Kecil was special as it is the Silver Jubilee of the competition started in 1986.

RTM received a certificate from the Malaysia Book of Records in recognition of running ‘The Longest Production and Broadcast of Children Singing competition in Radio’.

The certificate was presented to RTM Sarawak broadcasting director Abdul Jelani Mahmud by Malaysia Book of Records assistant producer Azrene Manap, witnessed by Taib in a simple ceremony before the show.

Also present at the event was Kuching City North mayor Mohamad Atei Abang Medaan.
