Arowana seller sees red over frequent power cuts

KUCHING: An arowana seller at Sungai Moyan near Batu Kawa here is infuriated with what he claimed to be frequent power blackouts in the area.

He said the power cuts have occurred daily for several hours after midnight since Thursday, and there was also a breakdown yesterday afternoon.

As he needs electricity for the aquariums to breed arowana, the man said he feared the fish would die and cause him to incur huge losses.

“Each of the arowana fish fry cost me between RM1,800 and RM2,000. The fish will not survive if there is not enough oxygen supply in the aquarium due to the frequent blackouts,” he explained.

Arowana is a popular ornamental fish and     mainly imported from Indonesia. The fish is also associated with the symbol of good luck and prosperity, and believed to be good for Feng Shui.

The breeder said he had tried to complain to Syarikat SESCo Berhad but to no avail.

He said his calls were unanswered and when he did get through, he was told they were busy.

Attempts by The Borneo Post to reach SESCo were equally unsuccessful yesterday.

A check of local newspapers did not find any notice of power shutdown or disruption to explain the frequent power cuts.
