KUCHING: Dialogue and training sessions will be conducted for traders found with plenty of rubbish scattered around their premises, said mayor of Kuching South City Council (MBKS) James Chan yesterday.

He said this would be used to encourage them in keeping their premises clean while doing business.

“They should not expect MBKS workers to sweep the floor for them everyday. They should clean the rubbish thrown by their customers,” said Chan.

He said the business people have to ensure their area is clean or the council would not hesitate to take actions against them.

He said it is everybody’s responsibilities to keep the city a clean and comfortable place to stay.

Chan was dismayed that although he had mentioned about the city cleanliness for many times, there are still people throwing rubbish on the street.

On another matter, the mayor advised KMC flat tenants to move out if they have children who already have houses outside.

This is to pave way for new tenants who have been waiting for the turn to stay there, he pointed out.

Chan revealed there are around 50 applicants placing their hopes for KMC flats as their new ‘shelters’.

“We need to make sure only the right persons are accorded stay at the KMC flats.

“Nobody should comment about the KMC issue anymore. They should stop talking about it. MBKS is able to handle the matter,” said Chan pointing out that some politicians used that particular issue for personal reason and political motives.

Responding to the issue about mosquito breeding here, Chan said MBKS reacted fast every time they received any complaint.

He said the council always does fogging and chemical is applied to kill the mosquito larva.

“There is confusion sometimes; some of the area is under JKR (Public Works Department). Anyway, since people complained, we will contact the related authorities to sort things out,” said Chan.

He said the council was also getting fund from the federal government to improve the toilet facilities here.

The mayor also asked the citizens to reduce plastic bag usage.

Instead, he encouraged the people to use recycle bag.

He said he would try to get some corporate bodies to produce some recycled bags.

Meanwhile, in another development, Mayor Chan said that up to date there were 10 KMC flat tenants who decided to move out.

This therefore would be an opportune moment for the 50 applicants, he noted but added that the  council would review letters from applicants to ascertain only those meeting the criteria would be moved to the KMC flat.

He said this at the monthly council meeting here yesterday.
