Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan said such events were also beneficial for the tourism and other related industries.

“I believe the exposure gained by participants of such events will stimulate their interest and help them achieve success in the modelling and fashion world which sees an annual income of RM995 billion worldwide,” he said.

Dr Chan added that modelling and fashion could create jobs and open up new horizons for budding talents.

“Many young women in many parts of the world have become successful models and are earning lucrative incomes,” he said.

Dr Chan said this at the Miss Sarawak Model of The World 2010 finale at Eastwood Valley Golf and Country Club last Saturday. His text of speech was read by Assistant Minister of Communications Datuk Lee Kim Shin.

Also present were Miri Mayor Lawrence Lai and the organising chairperson Melissa Wong, who is a former Miss Malaysia Model of The World.

Commenting on the beauty pageant, Dr Chan said it was significant because the brain behind it is a former Miss Malaysia Model of The World who had also represented the country in the ‘Elite Model Look of the World’ held in Sanyan, China.

“I wish to commend Melissa for sharing her modelling experience and skills with the contestants and the people of Miri,” he said, adding that it was rare to witness such an event in Miri.
