Young man pleads not guilty to raping underage girl

SIBU: A 20-year-old man accused of raping an underage girl pleaded not guilty yesterday at the Sessions Court.

He was ordered remanded until his next appearance in court on Aug 11.

John Babai from Katibas, Song was charged under Section 376(1) of the Penal Code which provides for a jail term not less than five years but not exceeding 20 years.

The convicted is also liable to whipping.

John was alleged to have raped the girl twice in his worker’s quarters at Deshon Timur Lane 17.

According to the brief facts of the case, John got acquainted with the girl last April 14.

On May 30, the girl who was with her mother in town saw John at about 10.30am and without her mother’s knowledge, followed John to take a bus to his house where they had sex about 4am the following day.

On June 1 about 7pm, they had sex again at the same place.

The girl was said to have confessed that she liked John and had consented to the sexual act.

On June 2, the girl called her mother at midday and asked to have her clothes sent to her as she had decided to stay with John.

The mother met her daughter at 3pm that day at an unspecified place.

She told her daughter to lead her to John’s house because she (the mother) wanted to meet him to discuss about his relationship with the daughter.

John was told to get into the mother’s car, and when he did, the mother drove to a police station to report him.

At the police station at about 7pm, John was placed under arrest.
