The netbooks, worth RM1.3 million, were distributed under the National Broadband Initiative programme, specially for poor students, launched by the government in March this year.

Kuala Nerang assemblyman Datuk Syed Sobri Syed Hasim presented the netbooks to the recipients at a function held at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Kuala Nerang here yesterday.

In his speech, Syed Sobri, thanked MCMC for contributing the netbooks, adding that this could reduce the digital divide between the rural and urban students.

MCMC director (northern region) Mohd Hussin Ali said two community broadband centres, at Kampung Baru and Kampung Tanjung, had been set up for the convenience of the netbook recipients.

“We will also monitor and provide training in information and communication technology (ICT),” he added.

Today’s recipients comprised form one to form five students from poor families.

The netbook package, with free broadband service, is supported by Telekom Malaysia Berhad (TM).— Bernama
