Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan Hong Nam said he was looking forward positively to the project and would use the best of his ability to identify a piece of land for the project.

“I’ve received numerous requests from various parties on the interest to set up the retirement village. I totally agree with the proposal and will look into this matter by seeking a piece of land for the project purpose,” he stated to the media after officiating at Miri Hopoh Association’s Senior Citizens Gathering at Boulevard Restaurant yesterday.

On the project locality, Dr Chan said the proposed retirement village would be located in the outskirts of the city.

“The size of land probably would be at least five acres and it would be equipped with various facilities,” he remarked, adding that the development would be handled by the private sector.

The project, he said, was also in line with the 1Malaysia concept where senior citizens from various races would get together.

Earlier, Dr Chan in his address pointed out that the success of any association greatly depended on the full support of its members as without such support it would be a hard task for its office bearers to push the association towards success.

“Stay united and never argue over petty issues that would only jeopardise the existing unity.

“For the sake of the association, we must place the association’s interest as priority. With good unity, it would help us ensure the association is moving towards the right direction,” he remarked.

Also present were Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Technology Datuk Seri Peter Chin Fah Kui, Pujut assemblyman Andy Chia, Miri mayor Lawrence Lai, president of Sarawak Hopoh Association Voon Shu Hua and Senior Citizens Gathering organising chairlady Cecelia Bong.
