Boon Kui show strength Ahmad Abdul to lead way as team grabs one-two pole in Sarawak Cub Prix

KUCHING: Ahmad Abdul Kadir took pole position in category A of the Sarawak Cub Prix 4th leg clocking 7:32.674sec in 10 laps of the qualifying stage held yesterday.

Ahmad Abdul shaved precious seconds off the clock to put his teammate, Aswandi Rambli (7:38.271s) on the second grid as team Boon Kui showed an early dominance of the two-day event by taking the first and the second grid to enter the semi-final today. Third on the grid will be Saiful Mohamad of MD Motors ahead of Zulzaki Kipli of Blitz Racing in fourth.

“This is the prelude of what is to expect of the final races tomorrow,” said Dato Ahmad Ibrahim, patron of the Sarawak Automotive Racing Sports Association (Sarsa) yesterday.

After the launch in Miri, the racers competed in Sibu, then Mukah. The racers converge in Kuching for the fourth and final leg of the Sarawak Cub Prix and will pit themselves in category A (13 laps), category B (12 laps) and the Dai-Ichi One Make Race (10 laps) to wrap up the racing year.

Among the highlights of today’s race, Ahmad personally will be keeping an eye out for 12 years old rider, Nasri Ishak who made his debut in Mukah.

“In this leg, Nasri is racing under category A, with team Boon Kui,” said Ahmad adding further that another two to three years is needed to groom the young racer further.

“Today (yesterday) he finished in the ninth spot of the qualifiers. In Mukah, racing under category B, he finished in the seventh position,” said Ahmad of the rising star.

Organised by the Sarawak Automotive Racing Sports Association, the objectives are clear cut, which is to encourage the growth of motorsports in the state as well as providing an avenue for youngsters to race legally and safely.

The temporary race track which is sanctioned and recognised by the Malaysian Motorsports Association gives the utmost priority to safety according to their standard guidelines, to avoid any untoward incidence.

Minister of Social Development and Urbanisation Dato Sri William Mawan Ikom is representing Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, to flag off the races today at 2.30pm.
