Have faith and confidence in BN — Taib

MUKAH: The people can have faith and full confidence in Barisan Nasional (BN) because the party’s leaders are sincere unlike members of the opposition, said Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud.

“I never tell lies because my upbringing moulded me not to tell lies,” he said during a Hari Raya gathering at Kingwood Resort Mukah yesterday.

He stressed that BN leaders worked very hard to enhance the prosperity and well-being of the people.

Taib pointed out that the opposition had claimed they would form the federal government on Sept 16, 2008, but this was simply the biggest lie spread by the opposition to hoodwink the people, including BN leaders from Sarawak.

“The opposition party in Sibu also lied when they claimed to have a flood mitigation plan prepared by experts from overseas. But when confronted by SUPP Sibu chairman Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh and other BN leaders, they (opposition) failed to produce any proof or evidence,” he said to loud chants of ‘Hidup PBB’, ‘Hidup BN’ and ‘Hidup Pehin Sri’ from the over 6,000-strong crowd.

Taib also lashed out at the irresponsible political tactics practised by the opposition, which he likened to a ‘hit and run’ scenario of drumming up small issues to gain public sympathy and creating hatred, fear and distrust.

He called on the people to judge for themselves the development and progress implemented by the BN government for Sarawakians to be educated, knowledgeable and excel in their undertakings, which included the establishment of six universities in Sarawak thus far.

“When I became Chief Minister (in 1981), the poverty rate in Sarawak was about 50 per cent. Currently, our poverty rate has dropped to only about 5 per cent because of the caring policy and proven ability of the BN government,” said Taib stressing that Sarawak will become the country’s richest state by 2030.

He said the establishment of the Public Complaints Bureau clearly reflected that BN was always ready to entertain and solve genuine complaints amicably.

In his speech, Mukah member of parliament Dato Sri Dr Muhammed Leo Michael Toyad said the people in Mukah and Sarawak fully supported Taib to continue serving as Chief Minister and Balingian assemblyman to improve the prosperity and well-being of the people.

Among those present were State Legislative Assembly (DUN) Speaker Dato Sri Muhammad Asfia Awang Nassar, Igan member of parliament Datuk Abdul Wahab Dollah, Bintulu member of parliament Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, Lambir assemblyman Datuk Aidan Wing, Jemoreng assemblyman Abu Seman Jahwie, Daro assemblyman Murni Suhaili, Mukah Resident Saudi Narani, Kingwood Group managing director Hii King Chiong, Kumpulan Parabina managing director Datuk Raziah Mahmud-Geneid and Hock Peng Organisation chairman Datuk Toh Chiew Hock.
