“The project is approved by the state government and Education Department,” said the chairman of the committee of management of Kuching Chung Hua Primary Schools No.1 to 6 Dr Chou Chii Ming at a press conference here yesterday.

The project included the constructions of a hall to accommodate around 1,500 students, 24 new classrooms, two computer rooms, a society activity room, a kindergarten dining room and a canteen.

Upgrading works to improve traffic congestion in the school area will also be done.

“Once the project is completed, there will be 36 classrooms, compared to 24 classrooms now. And the school will be transformed to type A Chung Hua primary school,” said Dr Chou.

The school board of management will open the project for tender next month, he said, adding that the board had also applied fund from the federal government through SUPP.

Meanwhile, the management is also carrying out fundraising to collect RM2 million for the upgrading.

The management urged members of public and school alumni to support the Chinese medium schools to continue and develop Chinese education.

“It is very challenging to sustain Chinese education under prevailing policies and conditions. The government did not allocate much fund to Chinese schools. We need to raise our own funds. We urged Chinese education supporters to strongly support this project,” said Dr Chou.

Donation from RM300 and above will receive a Yayasan Sehati Education Fund Charitable Trust which can be exempted from taxpaying.

While those who donated RM100 and above will get gifts sponsored by Maybank and Celcom.

He also appealed for the kind support from the public to donate a sum of RM50,000 to build a classroom. And, the classroom will be named after the donors or their families.
