University student charged with drug possession

KUCHING: A 20-year-old student of a local university was charged in the Sessions Court for possessing 60.4 grammes of cannabis.

Dhrma Shahrol Bolhassan from Taman Sukma pleaded not guilty to the charge before Judge Afidah Abdul Rahman who set the hearing date this Oct 24 to 27.

The court also ordered the accused to be further detained in police custody until the hearing date as the offence in unbailable.

Shahrol allegedly kept the dangerous drugs inside a house at RPR Siol Kanan, Jalan Sultan Tengah, Petra Jaya about 11.30pm on Sept 23, 2010.

The offence comes under Section 5 of the Dangerous Drugs Act (DDA) 1952 and punishable under Section 39A (2) of the same act which provides for life imprisonment and minimum five years’ imprisonment and not less than nine strokes of the cane.

Chief Inspector Teo Soon Teck prosecuted while the accused was not represented by any lawyer.
