NEW DELHI: A week after grabbing a bronze medal in the women’s individual 25m pistol event at the  Commonwealth Games, policewoman Bibiana Ng struck gold at the Dr Karni Singh Shooting Range here yesterday.

The Sarawakian accumulated 481.9 points to emerge victor in the women’s singles 10m air pistol event, leaving Indian shooter Heena Sidhu and Dina Aspandiyarova of Australia, trailing.

Sidhu gained 481.6 points to grab the silver while Aspandiyarova scored 478.8 points for the bronze.

“I think I shot very well, I am very happy with my performance but I would like to improve in future,” Bibiana told a press conference after the event.

She said she had no idea of her ranking when she was competing but added: “I came to know my score and rank only when I finished shooting.”

On her plans after the Games, Bibiana said she would begin training to prepare for the Asian Games scheduled next month.

“In the last edition, I was in the final…I hope to improve on it, this time around…I will be happy if I win a medal there,” she said.

Another national shooter, Joseline Cheah Lee Yean, was not fortunate as she finished fifth after accumulating 475.5 points.

Hasli Izwan Amir Hasan also only managed to get fifth spot in the Men’s Singles 25m Standard Pistol after accumulating 554.0 points.

The Malaysians defeated Australia’s Donna Urquhart and David Palmer 11-9, 11-6, at the Sri Fort Sports Complex for the title.

“It’s great that we managed to get a medal. Coming into the doubles, you don’t know what to expect. I was just struggling last night (in the semi-finals) when we lost, but today everything went as planned.

“The Asian Games are coming up and it’s the first time that we have the team championships at the Asian Games. It’s a lot like this, just a lot more Asians and a lot of people will are gunning for that (medal),” Nicol said after the victory.

Nicol won her maiden Commonwealth gold medal last Friday.

It was a sad note for national mixed doubles pair Chan Peng Soon/Goh Liu Ying when they lost 14-21, 21-17, 17-21 to Chayut Triyachart / Yao Lei of Singapore in the bronze medal match in badminton at the Siri Fort Sports Complex.
