KOTA KINABALU: Social networking website, Facebook, is still safe but users should know their risks and understand the value of the information.

Director of Symantec in Europe, Middle East, Africa (EMEA) and Asia, Pacific and Japan (APJ) Government Relations, Ilias Chantzos said this yesterday after a briefing on protecting critical information infrastructure in Malaysia at Magellan Sutera Harbour Resort here. “I don’t agree when people said that Facebook is not safe because it is definitely depending on how you are putting your information in your account.

“Some people use Facebook to communicate with family and old friends, while some people, especially the younger generations are looking for new friends,” he said.

Chantzos stressed that social networking website users must know how to use the Internet in a better way by identifying which information that should be shared and which is not.

He said since the new malicious codes grew by more than double on a year-to-year basis, it is important to protect each identity and avoid from updating something that offers physical threats on the Internet.

Recently, a survey conducted by international firm TNS Research Surveys revealed that Malaysians have the most number of friends on social networking websites like Facebook.

They also spend the most hours per week on such sites.

According to the survey, a Malaysian has an average of 233 friends in their social network, followed by 231 in Brazil and 217 in Norway.

Chantzos who is on a three-day visit here, said that social networking website users must know the risk of putting information on it and they must know what should be published to make sure there are no bad hats using it for criminal purposes.
