QEH tower block demolition dangerous

KOTA KINABALU: Demolition of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s old tower block is underway, but is it safe?

Demolition work has begun at the old tower block.

Members of the public have raised their concerns over the safety of two excavators, weighing more than 10 tonnes each,  seen dismantling on top of the tower block everyday.

Upon receiving the complaint, Senator Paul Kong personally visited the site and pledged to bring up the issue to the Health Department.

The eight-storey building was declared structurally unsafe in October 2008, and works have started since July this year to dismantle the main building to make way for the twin tower.

“From what I can see, the situation seems to be quite dangerous,” Kong said.

“The relevant authorities should ensure that the work is being done in the safest way to prevent unfortunate incidents from happening.”

He added that it would be a risk should debris or steel rods which were dismantled on the eighth floor dropped to the ground.

“No matter how major or minor the construction is, the safety of the public should be top priority.

“We shouldn’t wait till tragedy happens and point fingers at each other.”

Kong vowed he would he bring the complaint up to the Health Department.
