DBKU rebuts claim on overparking notices

KUCHING: The Kuching North City Commission (DBKU) has come in defence of its parking wardens by insisting that they did not issue overparking notices (OPN) overzealously.

Referring to the dissatisfaction raised by Green Road residents and the business community (as published in The Borneo Post on Oct 20), DBKU said the OPNs could have been issued to season parking holders due to several possible reasons.

“Such incident could have happened (to the season parking holder) if the driver had put a (normal) parking coupon on the dashboard or probably the driver had parked in an area not designated for ‘season parking’.

“Because of that, the warden was compelled to issue the compound notices,” it said in a reply emailed to The Borneo Post.

As such, DBKU advised motorists to remove used parking coupons to avoid being issued the OPN by the warden on duty. DBKU also refuted an allegation that the commission issued compounds to a car parked in a private area.

“The driver concerned can come to our compound notice and car park office at DBKU Jalan Satok to check on the matter,” the commission said.

On Tuesday, several residents and traders held a press conference at Green Road to express their dissatisfaction over being issued with OPNs despite having ‘season parking’ stickers on their cars.

They said they were losing their cool over the problem which they claimed had been going on for years.

A car owner also complained that she was served with compounds despite having her car parked at a nearby private car porch.

Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Youth chief and a political secretary to the chief minister Sih Hua Tong, who was present, assured them that he would bring the matter to the attention of the relevant authorities.
