SIBU: Temenggong Vincent Lau Lee Ming has called on the ‘better-offs’ in the society to give a helping hand to the less fortunate.

He told a congregation of Lau clansmen at the Sheraton Restaurant here on Wednesday evening that the society needed people who could help one another.

Lau, who is Sarawak Pan Chen Lau Clan Association’s president, was addressing diners of a charity dinner held in conjunction with the 7th Union World Lau Convention.

The charity dinner, he said, was organised to foster the act of charity as well as to show to the less fortunate that they were members of the society and would not be left to struggle on their own.

He urged Lau clansmen to make the act of charity their way of life.

“In Sarawak, the majority of the people are leading a comfortable life. But there are the minority who suffer and are in need of assistance,” he noted.

While giving the less fortunate material assistance, it was important to ensure that their self-esteem was not injured, Lau pointed out.

At the function, children from the Methodist Children’s Home, the Association for Children With Special Needs Sibu, Special Olympics Sibu and Sibu Autistic Association were given ‘angpows’.

Also present at the function were the main sponsors Datin Sri Wong Suk Ting and Datuk Lau Cheng Kiong.
