MIRI: A man choked on his lunch which caused considerable pain in his throat yesterday.

He was enjoying a meal with his wife at a restaurant in the city, when he suddenly felt something sharp pricking his throat – the pain surged through

his serves causing some parts of his body to become numb.

“It was so unfortunate – a yummy lunch turned into a nightmare and painful experience for me,” lamented the man who preferred anonymity.

The incident happened at noon on Oct 16.

“We ordered a plate of rice each with sliced pork and drinks costing RM11.80,” the man said when relating it to The Borneo Post.

The discomfort and pain in his throat provoked him to rush to Miri Hospital for a check up, arriving there at 1.02pm.

However he was not treated immediately, but had to wait for his turn as there were many other outpatients.

Finally, his turn came at 5pm when an Indian doctor attended to him.

“Throughout the waiting time I felt the pain and discomfort, especially whenever I tried to swallow,” lamented the man who is an engineer with a local private firm.

He had to undergo an X-Ray, but the cause could not be detected.

The second X-Ray revealed a foreign object.

It took the doctor half-an-hour to extract the object using a scope.

Indeed it was a shocking find – the object was a piece of wire measuring 2.2 centimetres.

Anyone could imagine how painful it was to have a wire stuck in the throat.

“That is exactly how I felt,” admitted the man.

He was given some antibiotic pills to prevent infection but spent the whole night in pain and discomfort which only disappeared by morning.

When asked whether he informed the owner of the restaurant about the incident, the man nodded his head.

“Her reply was ‘Very sorry, this is pure accident’ and nothing else,” he reported.

Asked what he expected as compensation from the restaurant owner, he quipped:
