MIRI: Sarawak is committed in producing more young athletes in the sport of martial art Tang Soo Do, to represent the state at national and international level.

Assistant Minister of Social Development and Urbanisation (Sports) Datuk Lee Kim Shin said so far various martial art associations have shown their commitment in developing the sport in effort to produce more exponents in the field.

“For example, the Tang Soo Do Association of Taman Tunku has made efforts to identify and select potential exponents to represent the state at national level and the government fully supports such effort,” he said when met yesterday at the inter-school Miri Tang Soo Do championship.

Lee said parents should support their children who have interest in martial arts so that the government’s aspiration to produce more exponents in the field can be achieved.

“We are happy and confident that the sport can move further forward and with support from parents, we trust that more national level exponents can be produced through this sport,” he explained.

He also believes that under the guideline of experienced coach, Tiong Chiang Chiong, Miri will be able to produce more Tang Soo Do exponents.

“He himself (Tiong) have represented Malaysia at the World Tang Soo Do Championship and won gold medals. With such talent, I trust he can produce more calibre exponents in the field,” he said.

A total of 200 pupils from primary schools in Miri took part in the one-day championship held at Petronas Games Village.

The championship was aimed at scouting talent in the martial art to represent the state in the national level Tang Soo Do championship which will take place at Miri Civic Centre from Nov 10 to 12 this year.
