THE  government is working towards opening up more industrial areas to maximise economic returns for the state.

Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan yesterday said more industrial areas, especially in Tanjung Manis and other places under Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) would be open.

“They’re a lot of new places that we can open up. The most important thing about industrial areas is that they not only bring in work for the people but also economic returns,” he said when met after the first day of the State Legislative Assembly meeting yesterday.

Dr Chan, who is also Minister of Industrial Development, said this when commenting on the RM1,737 million budget allocation for commerce and industry sector next year. The announcement was made by Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud in his 2011 budget speech.

“The allocation announcement also means we have to work harder than anybody else,” he said.

On the other hand, Dr Chan also said that the 200-acre Tebedu Inland Port would start its operations next year.

The area was supposed to begin operations about two years ago but was delayed due to financial constraints.
