ALOR SETAR: The Kedah government alleged yesterday that the double tracking project is causing the floods in the state.

Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Azizan Abdul Razak said the contractors, MMC-Gamuda joint venture, should enlarge the drainage for the flood water to flow quickly into the river.

During the big floods of five years ago, Azizan recalled, the Sultan Abdul Halim Airport and several other areas were never under water.

But since the start of the double tracking project, flooding has become worse in Kedah, he added.

Azizan said: “We called them (Gamuda) for an urgent meeting with us today (yesterday), but they did not come. If they persist in not meeting us, I will direct the Drainage and Irrigation Department to immediately open up a passage for the flood waters.”

Azizan also said water supply has been restored in Padang Terap, Kubang Pasu and Kota Setar. — Bernama
