KOTA SAMARAHAN: Muara Tuang assemblyman Dato Sri Mohamad Ali Mahmud has urged the rural people to be wary of “outsiders” who are trying to penetrate into villages to cause disunity among the people.

Ali said voters must not be easily swayed by those who appeared in villages only around election time.

“We know that the state election will be held soon and now we can see outsiders entering villagers to trick the people,” he said at a function where he handed over housing assistance at Kampung Merdang Lumut here yesterday.

He said the outsiders from the opposition did not come to help, but to destroy their unity and harmony.

“Members of opposition parties from Semenanjung Malaysia are here because they have their own agenda.

“They say they want to fight for the people, they are only fighting for the       interest of their leaders,” he said.

Singling out Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), he said its only objective was to install its leader as the prime minister. Ali said the BN victories in Galas and Batu Sapi by-elections showed that the people had begun to reject the opposition.

“I believe that Sarawakians, especially those in rural areas, would continue to be united to facilitate the government’s politics of development,” he said.

On the housing assistance, he said the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development  and Ministry of Rural Developmen had contributed a total of RM1.7 million to carry out the programme in Samarahan this year.

Out of this, a total of RM1.2 million was used to build new houses while RM528,000 was for house renovations.

“I really hope that this assistance would be of great help to the fire victims,” he said.

Later on, Ali presented keys of the new houses to six families whose houses were burnt down last February.

One of the recipients, 44-year-old Davies Layan, was grateful to the government for helping him and his family.

“I am really happy. I just don’t have words to thank the government,” said Davies, who was originally from Kampung Sungai Langir. Davies and his wife Rokayah Abdullah have two children – Kayan, 18, and Maktab, eight.

The fire that broke out just after 1pm on Feb 1 destroyed a five-door longhouse and a nearby house.
