KOTA KINABALU: State Resource Development and Information Technology Minister Datuk Dr Yee Moh Chai is confident that Sabah will be able to achieve the 30 percent target of household broadband  penetration rate by year-end.

“The National Broadband Initiative (NBI) target at the national level is 50 per cent, and this target has been exceeded with penetration rate at than 53 per cent now.

“In terms of Sabah, because of the various infrastructures development that we are still undertaking, our target of 30 per cent has yet to be reached but I’m sure given the rate of progress now, we should be able to achieve that with not  much difficulty,” he told reporters after visiting the various booths at 1Malaysia Broadband Carnival held at Padang  Merdeka, here yesterday.

Also present was Information, Communications and Culture Deputy Minister Datuk Joseph Salang.

The country has surpassed the NBI target when it has recorded more than 53 percent of household broadband penetration rate as at mid-October, as announced by Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin last week,  exceeding the initial target of reaching 50 per cent by end of 2010. — Bernama
