KUCHING: Lundu and Sematan will be developed because of their tourism potential, said Housing and Urban Development Minister Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Abang Openg.

He explained that this was because of the proximity of the two small towns to beaches, which provide uniqueness.

“From the RM4 billion allocated for development, RM3 billion will be allocated to develop rural areas including Lundu and Sematan,” he said when meeting a Neighbourhood Watch Committee (KRT) from Terengganu here.

On another matter, he pointed out that the development enjoyed by the society today was due to the close relationship and cooperation among many parties.

“Here in Sarawak we have about 28 ethnic groups but because of the cooperation and harmony in the society, we were able to develop the state well,” he said.

Commenting on the visit by 40 members of KRT Terengganu, he hoped it would help foster closer relationship between the people of Terengganu and Sarawak.

The programme, Abang Johari said, should be continuously organised so that people in West Malaysia would understand and know the traditions and heritage of the people here.

“With that we would realise the 1Malaysia vision,” he said.

Also present at the programme was the group leader Dr A Rahman Mokhtar.

The visit was the third made by the committee to the state.
