MIRI: Petanque Association of Miri Division will draw up a programme soon to promote and popularise the sport in the Division.

THE LEADERS: Syed Omar (seated centre) with the newly elected committee members of Pentaque Association of Miri Division.

Newly-elected chairman Syed Omar Wan Hamid is looking forward to the support of his ex-co in ensuring the successful implementation of the programme.

“Petanque is not new a sport in Sarawak as the state had sent a team to Sukma in Melaka this year. But in Miri, not many people are familiar with the sport.

“So I hope to further promote this game, particularly among the young people here,” he said.

According to Syed Omar, the association plans to hold a pentaque introduction workshop in January next year.

Also on the card are the Petanque Challenge Trophy between Miri, Bintulu and Brunei Darussalam, followed by the Andy Chia Trophy, the Pentaque Triple Championship in conjunction with Miri Festival and Petanque Merdeka Championship on September 16, 2011.

In addition, the association will hold its monthly single-doubletriple team event.

Meanwhile, at the association’s first biennial general meeting recently, Omar was elected chairman for 2010-12.

He is assisted by the deputy chairman Nordin Bakeri, and the ex-co comprising Jenali Len (secretary), Hinsan Ra’ee (deputy secretary), Puslan @ Roslan Sebli (treasurer) and Muhammad Syahmi Tan Abdullah.

The seven committee members are Zainuddin Ahmad, Zainuddin Sukarno, Abu Sehran Abdul Manan, Awang Yunus Awang Mostapha, Muhammad Aznil Abdullah, Faridah Abang and Ahmad Zaidi Bujang.

Also present at the general meeting as an observer was Janudin Abdul Rahman, deputy president of Pentaque Association of Sarawak.
