MARUDI: The success of the students and their ability to compete with the rest of the country was not entirely the responsibility of the school’s teachers and principal.

To succeed, the students must study hard. Teachers could only provide quality academic guidance.

There were many challenges ahead and the only way for them to be competitive was to work hard and excel in their studies.

Assistant Minister for Water Supply Sylvester Entri Muran said this at the Excellence Award 2010 ceremony at SMK Marudi yesterday.

Entri, who is also Marudi assemblyman, said education was among the NKRA policies set by the government to be made available to all rural children by 2020, adding that education was the key to a better life.

Entri also advised parents that it was not too late for them to get an education, which could only affect their future for the better.

He encouraged parents to see beyond school education and send their children to institutions of higher learning.

There were now many choices in the state, the better-known ones like Unimas, UIKM, Curtin Miri and Swinburne, he said.

At the function, Entri announced the government MRP grant of RM10,000 for the school.

Among those who spoke was the Parent-Teacher Association chairman Blalang Atom and the school principal Wong Hin Chai.

The Best Boy 2010 award went to Tie Teck Chee, a form five student, and Gloria Augusta William won the Best Girl award.

Those who received the YB Sylvester Excellence Incentive award in PMR were Lim Chia Chi (8As), Norzalina Kasi (8As), Alexis Wong Ching (8As), Sylviana Awing Lawai (7As) and William Agan Henry (7As).
