24-hour food kiosk often falls victim to non-paying customers

KUCHING: A 24-hour kiosk owned by a fast-food chain at Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman has been regularly falling victim to non-paying customers, who threatened employees before making off with pieces of fried chicken.

The latest incident reported to the police occurred around 4am on Thursday when a group of men approached the counter after leaving a nearby nightspot.

The men ordered six ‘take-away’ meal sets before stirring up a ruckus to intimidate the two young employees stationed behind the counter.

They then refused to pay for the food and simply walked off with the helpless employees too afraid to do anything.

The source added that a similar incident took place more than a week ago when a group of men ordered a large quantity of food before similarly walking away without paying.

Other incidents have seen outward theft being committed, with men climbing over the counter and emptying trays of fried chicken into plastic bags before escaping.

At least five incidents have occurred in recent times, with losses in each case ranging from RM50 to several hundred ringgit.

It does not help that the employees stationed behind the counter are usually young, easily intimidated, and outnumbered by the groups, the source added.
