SIBU: Temenggong Vincent Lau Lee Ming has praised the Malaysian Chinese community for their efforts in promoting the traditional wushu (martial art) in the country.

CHINESE MARTIAL ART: A wushu demonstration in progress by students at Sacred Heart School hall.

He said their commitment in this endeavour had helped to preserve this aspect of Chinese culture.

He noted that Malaysia ranked among the few countries outside China which had preserved Chinese culture well through community efforts.

Officiating at the 11th Inter-School Wushu Championship 2010 cum inaugural Inter-School Lion Dance Tournament 2010 at Sacred Heart school hall yesterday, Lau said cultural preservation also needed a helping hand from non-governmental organisations (NGOs).

In Malaysia, Lau said wushu had been successfully promoted in schools with the help of NGOs and the Education Department.

“Apart from promoting health, martial arts will help expose students to moral values such as patience.”

The two competitions were hosted by Sibu Martial Art (Quan Shu) Association.

Over 200 students from 16 primary schools took part in the competitions.

Among those present were association chairman Yung Dak Look and organising chairman Wan Kong Ann.
