KINABATANGAN: A woman was killed instantly in a head-on collision with two other vehicles at Kilometre 68, Sandakan-Lahad Datu Road yesterday.

District police chief DSP Jaini Abdul Kadir identified the victim as Nursia Yusof, 24, from Tawau, who was driving her Perodua Myvi car from here to Sandakan.

One of the injured was identified as Proton Waja driver Mohd Yasin Patongi, 43, who suffered serious leg injury. Another person who was travelling in a Perodua Kembara, escaped with minor injuries. His name was not available at press time.

Jaini said the victim’s car collided head-on with the Perodua Kembara which was coming from a separate direction in the 10.50am incident.

The impact forced the victim’s car to turn left before it was rammed by the Proton Waja that was travelling on the same route.

“Both injured men were rushed to the district hospital for treatment while the body of Nursia was also sent to the same hospital for a post-mortem,” he said.

The case will be investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

In another fatal accident, a 40-year-old local man was killed while the driver sustained serious injuries when a lorry that was carrying oil palm fruits rammed into a tree at Kilometer 65 Ranau/Telupid Road, near Kampung Mirulu, Ranau on Tuesday.

Sopian Cinongka, 40, succumbed to head and body injuries while the driver broke a leg in the 8am accident.

District police chief Suhaimy Hashim said the lorry was heading to Ranau from Telupid.

“It was believed the driver had lost control of the vehicle while making a sharp turn and caused the lorry to knock a tree.

“Both victims were trapped inside the lorry and Sopian was killed at the scene,” he said yesterday.

Suhaimi said the body was taken to the Ranau District Hospital for a post-mortem while the driver was sent to the Duchess of Kent Hospital in Sandakan.

Suhaimi called on eyewitnesses to come forward to assist police in their investigation.

Meanwhile, Ranau Fire and Rescue Services Department assistant officer II Rudy Mekii said a distress call was received at 8.02am and five personnel in a fire truck rushed to the scene within minutes.

“It took our personnel about half an hour to free both victims,” he said.
