The launch of the ‘One Day Mykad Replacement’ initiative at the state NRD headquarters yesterday by Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein means that Sarawakians only wait for an hour or two for their MyKad.

“Before this the people had to wait for 30 days. This system shows the Home Ministry’s commitment to serve the people,” said Hishammuddin during the launching ceremony outside Tun Datuk Patinggi Tuanku Haji Bujang Building at Simpang Tiga yesterday.

He also mentioned that the system currently available at Putrajaya and Melaka NRD headquarters was purposely introduced in Sarawak to help the state ensure that all its people have Mykad. At the launch yesterday, the first batch of the one-day Mykad replacement applicants received their cards in the evening. The applications were made in the morning.

He also announced that the Home Ministry had managed to achieve its three targeted key performance index (KPI) for 2009-2010.

These targets were to settle all outstanding Mykad applications; applications and appeals for entry permit (permit masuk); and late birth registration applications.

From 1997 to 2006, a total of 32,927 outstanding Mykad applications had been settled.

For entry-permit appeals and applications, a total of 16,812 applications from 2001-2008 had been solved and for late birth registration, all 93,360 applications from 2005 till June 2009 had been settled.

“Apart from accomplishing the KPIs, the ministry also ran a comprehensive in-depth process to ensure that all newly issued MyKad would reach applicants,” he said.

Before the launch of the KPI, a total of 405,097 MyKad were unclaimed and now, they had been reduced to 8,660.

Hishammuddin also stated the need to institute a system for managing effective presentation of the three KPIs for added value to the NRD’s services.

More initiatives were currently being studied and shall be implemented to help the people solve their identification and nationality issues. On expanding the one-day service to other NRD offices nationwide, he explained that it would be done in stages.

A total of RM42 million has been allocated to the NRD under the 10th MP for the project.

“The main concern is the safety of the MyKad. With today’s ever changing technologies, the government must keep track of technological advancement. The card must not be compromised by high-tech criminals,” he said.

NRD director Dato Alwi Ibrahim who spoke earlier on stated that before the centralised printing system was introduced, an average of 150 MyKad applications were processed daily.

Now, following the introduction of the new system, he was confident that MyKad and MyKid applications would be easier and more convenient, and would become an added value to the department’s services.

Assistant Infrastructure Development and Communication Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin and deputy chief secretary to the Home Ministry Datuk Raja Azahar Raja Abdul Manap were also present at the function.
