Participation in PTA can help boost students’ performance — Minister

PETALING JAYA: Federal Territories and Urban Well-Being Minister Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin is making an impassioned plea to parents residing in low-cost houses and apartments.

He does not want them to leave the responsibility of teaching their children solely on teachers.

Instead, Raja Nong Chik wants parents to cooperate and share their views through the parent-teacher association (PTA) for the school to focus on.

He said this would arrest the generally declining academic performance of students at low-cost houses and apartments.

“Busy schedules and ignorance of the PTA has resulted in students performing (in examinations) much worse than their parents.

“This may be a reason why at times, their children’s academic performance goes down.

When parents do not give time to their children, their studies become affected as compared to those children whose parents have time for the PTA.

“This phenomenon also happens in urban areas but for parents of students who live in low-cost housing, I find that their children fare worse academically, as compared to the parents,” he said.

Raja Nong Chik was speaking to reporters after presenting the 2010 Excellence Award and officiating the Sekolah Kebangsaan Taman Tun Dr Ismail (SKTTDI)(2) building here yesterday.

The minister reminded parents that work and busy schedules should not be excuses as continuous involvement of parents in their children’s academics had proven to be a factor for their success.

This was despite the students coming from low-cost housing areas, he noted.

Earlier, Raja Nong Chik presented certificates and tokens to 62 students who obtained 5As in their 2009 and 2010 Ujian Penilaian Sekolah Rendah examinations. — Bernama
