MIRI: Users of express boats who complained that there are no toilets at Kuala Baram jetty near the Asean Bridge here may soon find relief.

Their complaints would be forwarded to Sarawak Rivers’ Board (SSB), assured Assistant Minister of Infrastructure Development and Communication Datuk Lee Kim Shin.

Lee said he would see to it that SSB provide toilet facilities at the location for the convenience of express boat users along the Baram River.

The Senadin assemblyman said he would personally talk to the  jetty’s management, a private company.

“I’ve received complains on the unavailability of toilets at the jetty and will look into this matter soon.

“We will see how we can solve the problem and what solutions are to be taken,” he told the media after officiating at the Miri Prison Infokraf, Exhibition and Crime Prevention Programme at Bintang Megamall yesterday.

Lee was asked to comment on complaints made by members of the public, especially express boat users who had to do their ‘business’ in nearby bushes as there were no toilets at the jetty. The nearest toilet is about two kilometres from the jetty.

The jetty, opened in 2003 to replace the old jetty which was further upstream, also does not have rubbish bins or a bus stop and the benches are rundown.

The situation is making it difficult for thousands of boat users downstream who still depend on water transport. This gives a bad impression to tourists.

Meanwhile, the old jetty had basic facilities such as toilets, rubbish bins, food and drink stalls as well as bus service.
