AIDS cases drop drastically

SANDAKAN: Elopura assemblyman Au Kam Wah said AIDS cases had dropped from 6,978 in 2002 to 3,080 in 2009.

He said the world record had shown a death figure of 2,160 in 2009 compared with only 900 in 2008.

“In the case of women and children, it is a serious situation. There were only nine cases in 1990 and increased to 704 cases in 2008.

“There was an average of 10 new cases in 2008 with nine cases in 2009 only,” said Au at the World AIDS Day celebration organised by the Sandakan AIDS Support Group Association at the Sunday fair here yesterday.

He added that so far, there were 100 AIDS cases in Sandakan.

Also present were Sandakan AIDS Support Group Association president Dr Zaiton Yayha, performers and members of the public.

Au and Dr Zaiton, Sandakan AIDS Support Group Association committee members and others celebrated World AIDS Day.
