10,000 Christians to join Christmas parade

MIRI: A crowd of 10,000 faithfuls from 12 Christian denominations are expected to converge next month at Miri City Fan for the Miri City Chirstmas Parade 2010.

The parade is scheduled to kick off at 6.35pm, after which the crowd will march for 4km to the city centre and back to Miri City Fan.

“The parade is scheduled to be held on Dec 11, but we are still in the stage of discussing another proposed date – Dec 18,” disclosed Miri mayor Lawrence Lai yesterday.

He was met when chairing the event’s working committee meeting at Miri City Council (MCC).

This year would be the third time that MCC organises the parade in conjunction with Christmas.

“Miri is the first city in the state, in fact Malaysia, to hold such event, which brings together all Christian denominations in one celebration,” explained Lai, saying the event was also held to promote 1Malaysia.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan has confirmed his participation by officiating at the event.

It will also be attended by other federal and state dignitaries.

Participating churches are Roman Catholic Church (2,000 members); Sidang Injil Borneo (3,000); Anglican Church (1,000); Methodist Church (2,000); Baptist Church(500);Calvary Charismatic Centre (500); Christ the Livingstone Fellowship Church (100); Seventh Day Adventist Church (200); Full Gospel Assembly (200); The Shepherd’s Flock Church (150); Miri Latter Rain Church (50); New Creation Church (50) and All Nations Church (50).
