PETALING JAYA: A cleaner was sentenced to 15 months’ jail by the magistrates’ court here yesterday after she was found guilty on two counts of abducting and injuring a private college student four years ago.

Magistrate Aishah Hijriah Arshad handed down the sentence on P Indrani after finding that the defence had failed to raise reasonable doubts on the prosecution’s case.

She sentenced Indrani, 56, to 15 months’ jail for abduction and another 15 months’ jail on the second count of injuring the student, to be served concurrently from yesterday.

However, Aishah allowed a stay of the sentence pending an appeal at the High Court, and increased bail to RM10,000, from RM4,500 previously, on both charges.

In her judgment, Aishah said the court found that the evidence by Indrani was merely a denial and that the ability of the accused to identify her proved that she was involved.

“There was no reason for the victim to make up a story because he had never seen

the accused previously,” she added.

On the first count, Indrani, together with several others still at large, were charged with abducting Mohamed Nor Haja Najimuddin, 23, with intent to cause him to be wrongfully confined in front of Olympia College, Jalan Barat, Petaling Jaya here at 12.30pm on July 18, 2006.

The offence, under Section 365 of the Penal Code, carries an imprisonment of up to seven years, and shall also be liable to a fine, upon conviction.

Indrani, a cleaner at the Kuala Lumpur police contingent headquarters, was also charged, with a few others still at large, with voluntarily causing hurt by using a sickle and

lighted cigarette on Mohamed Nor at the same place, time and date.

The charge, under Section 324 of the Penal Code, carries a jail term of up to three years or fine or both upon conviction.
