Mustapa Kamal takes Angkasa to court over suspension

KUALA LUMPUR: Kuala Lumpur Malay Chamber of Commerce secretary-general Datuk Mustapa Kamal Maulut has filed legal action against Angkatan Koperasi Kebangsaan Malaysia Berhad (Angkasa) which suspended him from attending any of its conferences or meetings for a period of five years.

Mustapa, who had stood as a candidate for the president’s post of the umbrella body for cooperatives in the country at its polls on Dec 19 last year, filed an originating summons to challenge the suspension decision at the High Court (Appelate and Special Powers Division) registry here on Oct 26.

The media was given a copy of the summons after it was handed over to Angkasa president Prof Ali Baharom at the latter’s office in Kelana Jaya near here yesterday.

The court has fixed Dec 8 for mention of the case.

Mustapa wants the court to declare that the decision taken by Angakasa on Oct 26 is null and void as there were no provisions in Ankgkasa’s by-laws for such action to be taken. Mustapa lost to Prof Ali in the contest for the president’s post by a slim margin of 47 votes.— Bernama
